have you ever had a migrane?

If you’ve ever had a migraine you’ll understand how they are unlike any other type of headache. I remember the first time I experienced one I was sitting in chemistry class and all the sudden I could no longer read.  I could see the letters but I couldn’t read them.  Then a bright flashing spot appeared and grow larger until my visual field was occluded with a weird flashy, grayish, swirly thing.  About an hour later I experienced the WORST pain I have ever felt in my life. Seriously it was horrible!

I’ve tried in vain to describe what it was like to non-migraners (or people who’ve never had a migraine). Today I came across a great visual illustration of what my world looked like mid-migraine. Click on the picture below for the full effect.

Have any of you ever had a migraine? Did you experience the visual disruptions that I described above? What other symptoms did you experience?

My Brain

A few years ago I was a subject in an experiment. As hundreds of images were shown to me the researches took pictures of my brain. I recently rediscovered the CD they gave me and made a video from the images.

More pictures from Boston.com

A few days ago I mentioned a photo set that boston.com posted. They’ve put up a few more pictures.  I urge you to look at them and think about how our dependence on oil (notice I didn’t say foreign oil) is not only hurting our economy  but its destroying the global environment.

I say global environment because the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is not an anomaly. Despite that the major news outlets never report  them, spills of this magnitude happen every year.  Ridiculous as this may sound it’s completely true, the only reason we don’t hear about them is because they happen on other continents (namely in Africa). In fact every year, in Nigeria alone, as more oil is let loose on the environment as was spilled in the Exxon-Valdez! (Nigeria now has over 2000 active spills, yes 2000!)

Ironically tighter regulations of the oil industry won’t fix the problem it will only exacerbate them. As congress makes it harder and harder to pull oil out of american soil the oil companies will be more than wiling to move their operations to countries with looser regulations and more corrupt politicians.  In these countries the oil companies will be free to pull oil out of the ground with little respect for the local people and wildlife.  Another benefit of operating out of the country is that consumers will be completely ignorant to the source and the true cost of the oil they are buying.  This ignorance will  allow oil companies to drill and spill without fear of public backlash.

In the end any legislation will be quite effective in keeping our coasts and wildlife well preserved but it will sacrifice the wildlife and well being of ecosystems around the globe for that of ours.

You can trust me, I have a beard.

A friend shared this article on facebook today. Here are the first 2 paragraphs.

The way you gain people’s trust is to earn it over time by repeatedly proving that you deserve it. That, or grow a beard.

A recent study in the Journal of Marketing Communications found that men with beards were deemed more credible than those who were clean-shaven. The study showed participants pictures of men endorsing certain products. In some photos, the men were clean-shaven. In others, the same men had beards. Participants thought the men with beards had greater expertise and were significantly more trustworthy when they were endorsing products like cell phones and toothpaste.

So I guess my graduate school induced lack of hygiene has actually made me more reputable. Go figure.

Boston.com has a great piece on the impacts of the recent oil spill on the gulf coast. I encourage you to view it and to in turn share it.

I came across a infographic/webcomic today entitled “Why its better to pretend you don’t know anything about computers” by the oatmeal. It really made me laugh. Here is a little peice of it.
